Guy Laramee is an artist who has worked in many different fields of artistic expression including stage directing, music writing, and many more. However the medium of his that I’m going to share with all of you would best be categorized as sculptures. From what I can tell, Guy takes large tomes and carves them down to create awesome works of art.
I particularly love the artist’s statement regarding these creations.
“So I carve landscapes out of books and I paint Romantic landscapes. Mountains of disused knowledge return to what they really are: mountains. They erode a bit more and they become hills. Then they flatten and become fields where apparently nothing is happening. Piles of obsolete encyclopedias return to that which does not need to say anything, that which simply IS. Fogs and clouds erase everything we know, everything we think we are.”
I love how the artist turns the figurative mountains of books into literal mountains made of books! What a creative idea. Imagine all of the detail that had to go in to carving these books. Do you think it had to be done page by page by page? What a lot of work! That is a serious commitment to the finished product.
